Suitable Candidates for Dental Implants
At our dental clinic, we believe in conservative dentistry, and so we will consider all treatment options – such as crowns or root canal therapy before performing a tooth extraction. If an extraction is necessary, dental implants are a great treatment option to restore oral function and prevent deterioration of the jaw bone.
We strongly suggest patients stop smoking long before the implant procedure is conducted, and do not recommence smoking until the dental implants have healed and fully integrated into the jawbone.
Smoking can cause:
- Increased chances of implant failure.
- Periodontal disease, which is a major cause of tooth loss.
- Higher risk of post operative infection.
- Slower healing process.
Suitable candidates must also possess enough jaw bone material to facilitate a dental implant. In cases where the bone has deteriorated to such an extent that a dental implant cannot be inserted successfully, bone grafts can be utilised to restore a sufficient amount of bone material.
